Merel and Ratje's Memories Box, figurines finished.

All done, varnished and ready to go on the lid of the box. I'm very happy with them, the surface of the figurines is a bit more rough than my earlier sculptures and the painting more impressionistic but it fits them. On the base I added some of their favorite toys so the scene is set, and complete. Next step is finding a suitable box and paint it accordingly. Stay tuned!

There you are!

I started painting today, first layers. It's amazing, wonderful and scary in a sense too because with every dab of paint Merel and Ratje slowly appear again. This is one of those occasions I am grateful for my talent. More later, stay tuned.

Next phase; painting

I've finished sculpting, added a base for them to sit on and ta place for some of their toys to live on. After the base was dry I removed the cats so I can paint them all around. I'll glue them back on once all the painting is done. I kept the surface of the kitties a bit rough, sanded the sharp edges but wanted to keep the material visible in the final pieces. On to painting!

Current phase in the making of the Merel and Ratje figurines. Small steps, I can't work on them every day which is good because it gives me a fresh look every time. I'm still in doubt as to make them smooth like my other sculptures or keep them a bit rough. Cats have slick coats but I like to keep the material (clay) visible. We'll see as we go. Busy detailing but still keeping the overal shape and anatomy in view.

'Getting to know you.'

I'm quite satisfied now with the postures overall and am starting to make these kitties into Ratje and Merel. It's funny, just the smallest piece of clay, a bump here and a dent there can make the difference between any cat or Ratje and Merel.

The first careful steps

Progress in the Merel and Ratje figurines.
This is actually the second round of modeling, I forgot to take photos of the first stage (modeling clay onto the wire frame). Here I am simply getting to know the cats and try to sculpt them into the preferred positions. I think they will become fairly realistic but combined with my whimsical style. Still don't see Merel and Ratje in these basic shapes but that will come.

Two weeks ago our beloved Merel passed away after 16,5 wonderful and happy years with us. Merel was an important part of our feline family and we miss her terribly. To honor her I'm going to make a memories box for her. Because Merel and our old friend Ratje were best friends and because I never made a memories box for Ratje I'm going to create one for both of them. Seems appropriate. I'm going to use a photo I treasured for many years of them sitting side by side. These are the first wire armatures on which I will sculpt them with air dry clay. This will tug on my heartstrings while sculpting but it will help me come to terms with her farewell and I'll pour all my love and memories of her and Ratje into these little sculptures.

Ratje was Merel's hero, they were inseparable. This photo of them peeking through the catdoor will be the inspiration for Merel and Ratje's memories box.

Merel passed away on December 1, 2016. She was Foppe's partner, Trijntje, Puck and Iris' mother, Ratje was her all time hero and she was my baby for many happy years.

Ratje my first orange buddy passed away on September 4, 2004 after 17 wonderful years with us.

Custom Babushcats

Finally a photo of the commissioned Babushcats now they have arrived at their new home.
Aren't they sweet?
From large to small; Charles, Louis, Joey, Minnie and Marcel.

Back to work!

Today on the table; a new cast of the Timmy and Tommy box as the previous one sold yesterday! Two Holly Kings will try to add some holiday cheer this season and four more sleeping kitties as three grey babies found a new home this weekend. Looks like Boxing Day was invented for Foppe's Acre Originals!

Crystal King

It's no secret that I love sculpting, pottery ánd folkart, sometimes I wished I hadn't gone to art school because they taught me to use my head more than my heart (I tried to make up for it though ;-) ). Still I enjoy watching artists create art straight from the heart. There's a honesty and love in their craft which I truly admire.
I hope you enjoy this too!

Fly away home

The Fall migration is in full swing at the moment so I thought I'd honor our avian friends who have to travel so many miles to their winter grounds by adding this set of three sweet flying goose boxes to my collection in my shop.
So why not give these cute tiny geese a destination to land in a new forever home?
New item, set of three, catch them before they fly away!

Sweet slumber

I don’t know what it is but there’s something very peaceful about sleeping animals, maybe it’s because they can’t cause havoc with their eyes closed and snuggled so warmly together.
One thing is for sure though, these two won’t keep you up at night.
New Timmy and Tommy treats/treasury box soon available for adoption in Foppe's shop.

New shop front

Some of you already noticed the new Facebook banner, it was time for something new and improved!
I also re-designed the look of my shop, added the new banner and took new photos of (almost) all items on the same grey boards background. I loved the old look with photos of my pieces in the outside air but the surroundings were too noisy with not enough attention for the items. It's much more calm now and clearer. I love it!

Something new!

New shop and Facebook banner, pre announcement of something new in the new year!

Sweet sleepers

Awe, aren't they sweet? The first four sleeping kitty boxes are finished and listed in my shop.
I kept them fairly basic and minimal in color/decoration which should be easy and quick but for someone who mostly uses lots of color and detail it took a lot of thinking and trying.
I'm extremely happy with them!

This is also a very fun part of the process in creating a final piece! This kitty won't be as detailed like some of my other sculptures but will receive a beautiful 'all over' patina. Base is grey on which I will build up on in color. More later!

Timmy and Tommy

First beginnings of a new Timmy and Tommy box.

Sleeping kitty

I started sculpting this sleeping kitty two years ago but never finished it, somehow the green men came in between.
This week I found him again and decided to finish him. When I sculpted him I had our own dear Foppe in mind so it's a nice tribute to him aswell.

Last filling and sanding before making the mold.

Boxing Day

I sold one of my Puck boxes yesterday which made me realize how much I missed making these little gems. So I decided to take a break from Matryoshkas and breath new life in some older boxes I had never finished.

Barnyard Buddies

Yay, they're already up and running! (better catch them before they run away!
The Farm yard family is now listed in my shop and anxiously awaiting their new and forever home. Awe... I'll miss them.

Little piggy from my new FARMatryoshkas. This is not exactly what I had invisioned for these dolls but the more I look at her the more I like her. Funny how that goes.
And the smallest member of our new Farm yard Matryoshkas, the little mouse (or shrew).

Farm Matryoshkas, what else?

We live on a little farm afterall! Cow, sheep, pig, chicken and a little mouse. After these are finished I'll make the farmer, his wife and their three children. Stay tuned!

Custom Babushcats

Oooh, new custom kitties on the table!
I think these Babushcats will become really famous!

A band of angels!

They come in a set of three, red, purple, green and I love the touch of yellow!

Angel candle card style 2016

I think she's much cuter than her older sister. Available in my shop.

Evolution of an angel

Top left is the original version, bottom right is the new angel and all the stages in between (clockwise). I thought I had finished yesterday (top middle) but in hindsight didn't like how she was holding the candle, so I tried to make it more clear using lines. Still not good, more sketching was needed. New lino. Finally went back to the original way of her holding the candle (bottom left). Made some changes in her face too and she's ready for print!

Guardian Angel

Even though my angel card has been a best seller for many years, especially the candle window version (blue one in this photo) I decided it was time for a new version. So I've been designing and cutting today. I think I'm on my way. Also started designing a winter village that will also be printed on transparent paper so you can light a candle behind it.

The three Noëls

I always keep the original from pieces I'm planning to reproduce so I have a perfect example to work from when I have to replicate something. Today I worked on two Noëls, one of them is ready to ship tomorrow and start a new life.

Cute as a button!

First series of 2017 Christmas cards are printed, I love love love them!
Available in my shop on Etsy!

Starry starry night

I think Vincent must have been a lino cutter too! ;-)

Christmas cards 2017

Oooh, started working on this year's Christmas cards!

The Famous Foppe's Acre Babushcats!

Finished my new Daytime and Nighttime Babushcats today (only need a coat of varnish) and I'm very happy with my four new litters of kitties! Had great fun painting these!

One day's work, painting the base color of 16 kitties (actually make that 32 because they needed two layers of paint). On with decorating *the fun part!

Babushka Planet

More new kitties in the making; Day Time and Night Time Babushcats! Funny, at first my inclination was to give them open eyes on the day time dolls and closed eyes on the night dolls but cats are nocturnal so they need to be awake after dark! These will be painted in the course of next week. Stay tuned!

Night and Day, you are the one...

Also on the table today are new Day- and Night time kitties! Variations on the Famous Babushcats.

Cute, cuter, cutest

Oh, just one more picture because I'm having so much fun with my new winter friends! (almost done!)
